The article substantiates the need for a quantitative assessment of the geostrategic position of regions and proposes a methodology for constructing an integral geostrategic index as a tool to measure the spatial advantages and vulnerabilities of Russian Federation constituent entities. It is shown that while the category of "geostrategic territories" is enshrined in Russia's Spatial Development Strategy, the lack of formalized criteria for their designation complicates the justification of differentiated regional policies. Drawing on an analysis of theoretical concepts regarding economic-geographic location, classical and critical geopolitics, and modern approaches to constructing composite indicators, a six-component index structure has been developed; this comprises sub-indices for geopolitics, transport and logistics, coastal location, resource-based economics, settlement and demographics, and risks and vulnerability. The procedures for indicator selection, normalization, weighting, and aggregation are described, and requirements for interpreting the results are outlined. The study demonstrates that the geostrategic index enables the classification of a region's position into "advantageous" and "vulnerable" dimensions, identifies regions with high potential but underutilized advantages, and serves as a basis for monitoring the effectiveness of state spatial policy measures. The limitations of the approach and directions for its further development are also identified.
