Low-Cost vs. Hybrids: CASK/RASK and Seat Loading Comparison

Abstract (English):
The article compares two business models of air carriers — low-cost and hybrid — through the unit economics of routes. The main metrics used are CASK (cost per available seat-kilometre) and RASK (revenue per seat-kilometre), as well as the load factor as a link between costs and income. It analyzes how the choice of fleet, cabin density, airport type, schedule and pricing rules shape CASK/RASK trajectories on short and medium legs, in high and low seasons, with fuel surges. It is shown that the advantage of any model is determined by the consistency of these decisions with the type of demand and the network: low-cost airlines win due to flexibility and additional income, hybrids — due to hubs and the corporate segment. The practical conclusion is to manage the system, not the tariff, maintaining a break-even load through fine-tuning the fleet, product and sales channels.
