The steel industry plays a vital role in Vietnam's economic development, serving as the foundation for many other industries. Despite significant production growth and strong government support through infrastructure investment and trade protection measures, the industry faces a host of challenges. Key issues remain heavy dependence on imported raw materials and fluctuating prices for Chinese steel, the growing pressure of global trade barriers, technological backwardness, and high levels of environmental pollution. The experience of the Russian steel industry, which has faced significant challenges due to sanctions and overreliance on low-cost exports, serves as an important cautionary tale for Vietnam. To ensure the sustainable development of the Vietnamese steel industry, a strategic shift from basic steel production to high-value-added products, strengthening the domestic value chain, and actively implementing green technologies are necessary. This will create a competitive, self-sufficient, and resilient steel industry resilient to global fluctuations.
