The relevance of the research is determined by the growing instability of the external and internal economic environment, reinforced by geopolitical challenges, sanctions pressure and the need to ensure the sustainable development of the regions in the new economic reality. In this context, the issues of assessing economic security become systemically important for strategic management at the regional level. The purpose of the study is to systematize and critically analyze modern methodological approaches to assessing the economic security of the region, taking into account the practices of 2021-2025, as well as to develop recommendations for their improvement in order to ensure the sustainable development of regional economic systems. The research uses methods of comparative analysis, a systematic approach, generalization of scientific publications, statistical analysis and expert assessments, as well as a critical interpretation of methods proposed by leading Russian researchers and scientific schools. The results of the study include the identification of key limitations of existing methods (subjectivity, ignoring regional specifics, labor intensity), the formalization of two dominant approaches – threshold and probabilistic – and the justification of the need for an integrated method adapted to the conditions of digital and socio-economic transformation. In conclusion, the thesis is substantiated that the modern assessment of the economic security of the region should be based on a dynamic, flexible and multidimensional system of indicators, complemented by regular monitoring and scenario forecasting, taking into account both national trends and local features of socio-economic development.
