The relevance of the research topic is due to the importance of credit operations of commercial banks in ensuring the development of entrepreneurship and maintaining economic growth, as well as in improving the level and quality of life of citizens. The article analyzes the dynamics and structure of loan debt of Russian credit institutions. It is concluded that lending to large enterprises does not pose a threat to banks of credit risk growth, whereas lending to small and medium-sized businesses is a rather risky area of lending for banks, reducing the quality of banks' loan portfolios. An analysis of the retail loan portfolio of Russian banks has shown that it has grown significantly over the past three years. The increase occurred for all types of retail lending. A positive fact is the emerging dynamics of reducing the share of overdue loan debt in the retail loan portfolio, as the most risky for banks.
