Modern challenges from the external sector, require the solution of many socio-economic problems, rapid response and formation of adequate investment potential and the creation of conditions for investment both internal and external. In these conditions, assessment and analysis of investment activity, identification of possible areas of development of investment potential is an important component of the overall strategy for the development of the Russian economy. The purpose of this study is to assess the impact of external influences on the investment activity of Russia. The key indicators of investment activity at the state level have been analyzed. Special attention is paid to the sanctions against the largest Russian banks, which led to a reduction in foreign investment. Changes in the volume of foreign direct investment (FDI) in Russia since 2016 are assessed, with a focus on a sharp decline in 2022 due to large-scale sanctions measures and the withdrawal of Western companies. The industrial production index (IPI) is also analyzed in dynamics, reflecting the adaptation of the economy to new conditions. The conclusion is made about the multifaceted impact of sanctions: on the one hand, they limit access to capital and technology, on the other hand, they stimulate structural changes, development of national financial instruments and strengthening of economic ties with friendly countries.
