This article analyses the phenomenon of extremely low trust among agricultural university students in online investment services. Survey data from 276 first‑year students at Omsk State Agrarian University show that only one in ten respondents (10.1%) express trust or rather trust in such instruments. A comprehensive analysis of quantitative data (questionnaire items B27, B28, B8, B9, B10, B11) and materials from two focus groups (16 participants) was conducted, and key factors contributing to the formation of distrust were identified: misunderstanding of the business model of financial platforms (44.9% “rather distrust”), persistent association with fraudulent schemes (26.1% “completely distrust”), lack of institutional guarantees, and low brand awareness of new players. It was found that distrust correlates statistically significantly with a low share of those using savings services (13.0%) and the absence of experience in earning income from digital operations (only 30.4% of respondents have such experience). It was established that the key trust criteria in online purchases are other users' reviews (85.5%) and brand awareness (58.7%). The author proposes a model for overcoming distrust through the introduction of branded educational programmes developed jointly with major brokers, the use of exchange simulators with virtual capital, and the inclusion of sections on financial market regulation and deposit insurance systems in academic courses.
