This paper examines the managerial and institutional challenges of digital transformation in sport against the backdrop of the rapid expansion of esports. By analysing Russian regulatory documents (2018–2024), industry reports from the United States and China, and recent academic studies, the authors identify three major bottlenecks: fragmented ICT adoption, disintegrated accounting systems, and weak inter‑agency coordination. The lack of a single authority and a unified data‑governance framework slows the deployment of digital services for fans and athletes. The article classifies implementation risks–ranging from skill shortages to regulatory ambiguity–and outlines data‑centric governance principles (data primacy, platform unity, autonomy). Particular focus is placed on esports venue infrastructure and the impact of the COVID‑19 pandemic on the shift toward hybrid competition formats. The study offers actionable recommendations for government bodies, sport federations, and SportTech providers aimed at narrowing the technology gap and enhancing the competitiveness of Russia’s sports sector.
