Traditionally, bankruptcy is studied as a purely legal and financial institution. However, this approach is reductionist and does not allow us to understand its true role in the economy as a complex socio-economic phenomenon. This article suggests considering bankruptcy through the prism of three complementary and interrelated points of view: philosophical (exploring its essence, meaning and ultimate goals), epistemological (analyzing the problems of its cognition, interpretation and distortion of perception) and, finally, through the prism of the evolution of economic thought (demonstrating how the understanding of its nature and functions has changed in the history of economic exercises). The novelty of the authors' approach lies not in the use of each element individually, but in their synergy. This approach transforms the study of bankruptcy from a narrow economic or legal task into a holistic interdisciplinary study that reveals its essence, the problems of its cognition and historical variability. A study in this vein will not only fill in the existing gaps in economic theory, but will also make a significant contribution to the development of crisis management and the formation of development strategies in conditions of uncertainty.
