The article is devoted to overcoming simplified interpretations of the dual nature of the Russian defense-industrial complex (DIC). The aim of the study is to identify the systemic determinants that cause the hybrid model of the DIC's functioning, which combines market and non-market mechanisms, and to substantiate its stability and functionality. The methodological basis was the institutional approach, using methods of system and comparative analysis, and content analysis of strategic documents. The results showed that the duality of the DIC is not an anomaly but a natural institutional construct formed in response to the need to simultaneously address national security tasks and integration into the market economy. It manifests itself in hybrid mechanisms of management, financing, pricing, and strategic planning, ensuring the concentration of resources on strategic priorities and the use of market incentives to improve efficiency. In the context of geopolitical turbulence, the institutionally determined duality becomes a key advantage of the DIC, allowing it to adequately respond to the challenges of the time and act as an element of the technological sovereignty strategy.
