The paper addresses the issue of quantifying the impact of the cost index on the operating costs of an airline when managing the flight profiles of narrow-body aircraft. The relevance of this study is driven by the increasing share of fuel costs and aircraft utilization time in the overall cost of air transportation. The paper proposes an economic and mathematical model where the cost function of a flight is defined as the sum of fuel costs and time-related costs that depend on the flight duration. The results of the study indicate that there is a range of cost index values that minimizes the total costs for a given fuel price and flight hour cost. It has been shown that switching from the minimum fuel mode to the cost-optimal mode can reduce the cost of a single flight by 3-4%. Recommendations have been formulated for using the model in a decision support system for configuring FMS parameters and CI selection policies.
