This paper consistently examines various scholarly perspectives on the concept of retail in Russia. It highlights the key challenges facing retailers in today's economic environment. It examines the economic factors that underscore the importance of research into the development of domestic retail, defining its role in the economic sector. A list of current challenges facing retail as a whole, as well as at the regional level formulated. An attempt is made to consistently explore approaches to addressing these challenges, both from the perspective of monitoring changing external conditions and from the perspective of realizing the internal capabilities and developing the potential of domestic retailers.
