Development banks as a type of development institutions
Abstract and keywords
Abstract:
Development institutions exist in various forms, and development banks occupy a special place within them. This article examines the concept, operational features, and types of development banks. The study firstly presents a classification of development banks by dividing them geographically into multilateral, bilateral, and national financial institutions. Secondly, it identifies the particular importance of development banks for the economy and socio-economic processes: (a) they are willing to provide long-term financing for large-scale infrastructure projects; (b) they are willing to assume risks that commercial financial institutions are unprepared for; (c) development banks become particularly important during periods of economic crisis and uncertainty, when economic entities and society especially require support.
