The article provides a comprehensive analysis of import substitution development in Russia using the machine-building industry as a key sector of the country's industrial complex. Historical preconditions for import substitution policy formation are examined, along with main implementation stages from 2014 to present, and institutional mechanisms of state support for domestic production. Special attention is given to detailed study of machine-building sector key performance indicators dynamics, including production volumes, component localization levels, export-import operations structure, and investment activity. Based on the analysis of leading machine-building enterprises practices, systemic problems and development limitations are identified, with specific recommendations proposed for improving import substitution mechanisms and enhancing Russian industry competitiveness under global challenges.
