The article is devoted to the design of space and its interaction with the environment. Its humanistic possibilities as project activities are considered. The main approaches to understanding design are identified, views on design as a project activity are analyzed. In particular, the stage of transition from commercial design to solving social problems of the 70s. Concepts of the 60s of our country, associated with the development of scientific and project foundations of design.The stage of interaction between "Prognostics" and the design project culture is noted. The period of the 90s is marked by the design of cultural values, the 2000s by the construction of context. An analysis of the concept of human-oriented design, its basic principles and approaches to designing a thing, as well as a modern view on the possibility of changing the paradigm free from anthropocentrism is made.
