Psychological Determinants of Successful Adaptation of First-Year Students to Higher Education
Abstract and keywords
Abstract (English):
The transition to a new stage of the educational ladder—the beginning of university studies—is a key period in the life of a first-year student, impacting their personal growth and professional preparation. Becoming a successful professional begins with successfully adapting to a new environment. In this context, academic and personal aspects intertwine, presenting the student with a complex set of challenges. This article explores the key elements shaping the adaptation process. These include the student's level of motivation, emotional stability, self-esteem, and ability to maintain social connections and establish interpersonal relationships. It also focuses on the personal qualities that influence the speed and effectiveness of integration into the university educational environment. Of particular importance in the adaptation process is the new student's ability to cope with stress, self-regulate, and apply cognitive strategies to overcome learning obstacles. Typical difficulties encountered at the initial stage of education are discussed, including academic and social aspects, as well as psychological ones, such as fear of the unknown and lack of self-confidence. A key component of successful adaptation is support from the university community, including faculty and the student body. Such support significantly increases students' chances of quickly adapting to the learning environment and engaging in the learning process. Furthermore, the relationship between socio-psychological adaptation and student academic performance is explored. The paper concludes with specific practical recommendations for educational institutions. These include creating favorable conditions for the adaptation of new students, implementing psychological support programs, developing self-regulation skills, and stimulating an active social life on campus.
